Hello All,

I decided to build the 17th Century Naval Gun and Carriage for my first build on this forum.

Forward...

After downloading the prints the other day, I started the carriage using some Poplar I had lying around. I cut out the templates, transferred the sections and pilot drilled the holes. With knowledge of extra time while at work (multi-tasking...actually I set something in for testing and had lots of time while waiting for the sample to come out) I cut out the pieces for both carriage. The wheels I got lucky with, I had two hole saws spot on for sizing and the center pilot worked out.

The last pics I have dry fit one unit together. I decided to try to utilize some copper tubing and 14 gauge wire I had for the fasteners. Have some sanding and filing to go but it's coming along.

Lastly, I have not chosen the material for the cannon themselves as of yet. I am having a friend at work check on some 1.5" brass and will attempt to turn....have to wait and see.

All comments are welcome, and thanks for stopping by.

Regards,
T

Thank you Winston, for the words of encouragement.

These photos are the staining and finishing process or the project.. Rather than painting the carriages, I decided to stain. I used a red oak stain on the poplar. I painted the brass and copper fitting with black acrylic and dry brushed in some gun metal for a more metal appearence and contrast. Finallly using some deluted black I made what appear to be water staining for a weathered look and added a little hull red for a hint of rusting. I have the second carriage to assemble yet and I am still tracking down some free brass rod for the guns.

Thank you,
T
