Hi folks,

I'm on a fact finding mission. Well, actually a picture finding mission.

Does anyone have access to pictures of 17th century English 5th Rate
models or information regarding the stern galleries as they may have
been built on such a ship?

Myself and Jeff are working on a set of concept drawings
for the Sapphire and we're
kind of hung up on what the Gallery (if any) might have looked like.

Any books you could recommend would also be greatly appreciated.

You can post the information here or email it to me directly at winston@modelshipbuilder.com

Thanks!

Winston,

Here's one of galleon of 1610.  It's found in "The Galleon: The Great Ships of the Armada Era" by Peter Kirsch.

Winston,

I don't know if you are still looking for stern galleries or not but I came across a site that may have the answers to which you and Jeff are trying to find. It is of the HMS Mordaunt built by Hans Haulan the pictures are outstands and there are quite a few of he stern. I believe she buildt as a 3rd rate but the lines are almost as identical to Deans notes as I have every seen or found at the point.

Here is the site address:   http://www.schifferlbauer.at/seite22.html

Good luck

Dale

Hi Dale,

Yes, we're still looking at whatever material that may prove to be helpful.

I am somewhat familiar with the Mordaunt, having seen a model on the NMM site, but haven't paid very close attention to it because the pictures there are very limited.

Thanks for the link, I will definitely check it out.

We're still working on the drawings. At present we're at a little bit of a standstill as far as getting any drawing done. We've been working with different software packages which makes it a little harder to collaborate, however, that situation has been resolved. Jeff is just awaiting arrival of the software which is due in any any day. Then things should move along much better.

We've had a ton of material sent to us which has all proved to be very helpful. We have a good idea where we are going and just need to get it all drawn up now.

Have a look in John Franklin "Navy Board Ship Models, 1650-1750". There are pictures of a 34guns Fifth Rate from 1670 on page 85ff. The model is part of the Kriegstein collection.
I don't know if there is a problem with the copyright, so I don't scan the sides.

Hi Christian,

Yes, someone was kind enough to forward me copies of related ships via email.

That's one book I will have to add to my book collection.

I would also like to get my hands on a copy of the book with the Thompson Collection of models in it. They are on display at the Ontario Art Gallery. However, I'm not sure if there would be any useful pictures in it as it relates to our research here (probably is though).

Hello Winston,

Again, I'm catching up late on some of these old threads, but if you're still interested inthe Thomson Collection book it is available on Amazon at this link

http://www.amazon.com/Ship-Models-Thomson-Collection-Gallery/dp/190347082X/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1276376934&sr=1-5

I have the book and can tell you there are three models that may be of some interest: A third rate 70gun ship, English 1692, a 20-24 gun ship 1702, a 4th rate 50-54 gun ship 1703-10. Then we jump to 1721, 1774, etc.
Several pictures of each ship including sterns, heads, etc.

I also have a copy of the Nautical Research Journal Vol 44, No.2 which features models from the Rogers collection at Annapolis, including an English 5th Rate "demi-batterie ship"(?) of 1689 with 10 ports on the gun deck (each side). There is also a model of an early 1700's 6th rate with a very small "pink" stern which it says was a short lived experiment in the 1690's and early 1700's. This may rule out the narrow stern for the Sapphire. Maybe. I haven't read this article in years but I will re-read it and let you know of anything interesting.
